James 1:22-24 Do not merely listen to the word of God, and so deceive yourself. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word, but does not do what it says is like a man, who looks to his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Think about it have you ever deceived yourself; I know I have; I have imagined I am good and then later repented. The only good in me is the work of the Holy Spirit in me. In my own strength, in my own wisdom, on my own, I always fail. But I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
